ABOUT THIS TOUR

Experience Classic Climbing Cayambe, Cotopaxi & Chimborazo Expedition

From Ancient Andean Culture to Three Iconic Summits
Embark on an extraordinary 16-day journey through the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes, combining the cultural richness of Ecuador with the challenge and beauty of high-altitude mountaineering. This expedition is designed for adventurous travelers who want to experience Ecuador beyond the traditional tourist route — progressively acclimatizing, developing essential glacier skills, and ultimately attempting the summits of Cayambe, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo.

Your journey begins among indigenous traditions, colonial heritage, volcanic landscapes, and spectacular Andean valleys. From the vibrant colors and ancestral culture of Otavalo to the historic streets of Quito, the turquoise waters of Quilotoa, and the lush waterfalls of Baños, every stage reveals a different side of Ecuador.

But at the heart of this expedition are three extraordinary mountains.

Three Volcanoes. Three Challenges. One Extraordinary Journey.
The adventure gradually builds toward higher and more demanding terrain. Your first major objective is Cayambe at 5,790 meters, the third-highest mountain in Ecuador and the highest point on the Equator. Before attempting its summit, you will spend a full day on the Cayambe Glacier learning essential mountaineering techniques, including crampon use, rope travel, ice-axe handling, glacier safety, and basic crevasse rescue.

From Cayambe, the expedition continues south along Ecuador's legendary Avenue of the Volcanoes, a spectacular corridor of snow-capped peaks and volcanic landscapes. Here awaits Cotopaxi at 5,897 meters, one of the world's highest active volcanoes and one of the most recognizable peaks in the Andes.

The summit attempt begins in the darkness of the early morning. Step by step, you ascend through the glacier beneath a sky filled with stars, watching the first light of sunrise spread across the Andes. Reaching the summit means standing above the clouds, surrounded by an unforgettable panorama of Ecuador's volcanic giants.

From the Andes to the World's Highest Point from Earth's Center
The final and greatest challenge is Chimborazo at 6,263 meters, Ecuador's highest mountain and, because of the Earth's equatorial bulge, the point on Earth's surface farthest from the planet's center.

After entering the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve, you climb to High Camp and prepare for the final summit attempt. The ascent begins around midnight, taking you across glaciers, ice slopes, and high-altitude terrain toward the summit.

As dawn approaches, the landscape slowly emerges from the darkness. Standing at the top of Chimborazo is more than reaching a number on an altimeter — it is the culmination of days of preparation, physical effort, technical learning, and mental determination.

Ecuador Beyond the Mountains
What makes this expedition truly unique is the opportunity to experience the many faces of Ecuador within one journey.

Visit the legendary Otavalo Market, one of the most important indigenous markets in South America, and discover the craftsmanship and traditions of the Andean communities. Explore Cotacachi, known for its leather artisans, and admire the volcanic beauty of Cuicocha Lagoon.

Walk through Quito's UNESCO World Heritage historic center, surrounded by centuries-old churches, colonial architecture, traditional streets, and panoramic views from El Panecillo.

After the intensity of the high mountains, discover the vibrant landscapes of Quilotoa, with its striking turquoise crater lake, and Baños, surrounded by cloud forest, waterfalls, and lush Andean vegetation.

This is not simply a mountain climbing program. It is an opportunity to experience Ecuador's culture, landscapes, people, history, and mountains as one extraordinary story.

More Than a Summit — A Journey of Transformation
Every day of this expedition has a purpose. The itinerary is structured to progressively expose you to altitude, allowing your body to adapt while you gain the technical skills and confidence required for higher peaks.

Traveling with a professional mountain team means having experienced local knowledge, logistical support, technical guidance, and a carefully structured itinerary behind you — elements that are especially valuable when navigating glaciers, high-altitude terrain, changing mountain conditions, and remote environments.

You could visit these places independently, but an expedition of this scale is about much more than reaching each destination. It is about knowing when to push forward, when to rest, how to move safely through technical terrain, and how to make the most of every stage of the journey.

From the colors of an Andean market to the silence of a glacier, from ancient volcanic landscapes to the first rays of sunlight touching a summit, this expedition invites you to experience Ecuador at its most authentic and extraordinary.

Three iconic volcanoes. Sixteen unforgettable days. One journey that will stay with you long after you return home.
